Greetings! Welcome to College of Arts and Sciences’ website. Here you will find information about various academic programs offered by the College. Xavier’s College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) consists of six academic divisions comprising of twenty-one academic departments offering more than forty majors. The divisions and departments together with the College Deans share responsibility for the quality and integrity of the academic programs of the College as well as for our fidelity to Xavier’s mission.
The six academic divisions are:
- Biological and Public Health Sciences (Departments of Biology and Public Health Sciences)
- Education and Counseling
- Fine Arts and Humanities (Departments of Art, English, History, Languages, Music, Philosophy, and Theology)
- Mathematical and Physical Sciences (Departments of Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physics)
- Social and Behavioral Sciences (Departments of Communication Studies, Mass Communication, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Speech Pathology)
Xavier’s core curriculum is the basis of our liberal arts education. Our students receive a well-rounded and integrated learning in the arts, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and professional studies that can be applied to contemporary problems. Xavier provides an affordable, quality education with proven results. In the Fiske Guide to Colleges 2014, Xavier has been named a "best buy" in a guide to colleges and universities in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. Xavier is the only university in Louisiana to make the list. Xavier is ranked number 13 in the The Affordable CollegesOnline.org (ACO) website’s list of Top 36 Affordable Roman Catholic Colleges with High Starting Salaries. Xavier is the only predominantly Black and the only Louisiana college to make the list. Xavier has consistently made The Princeton Review’s list of best colleges in the country. According to a recent report released by the National Science Foundation, Xavier is ranked 5th in the nation in producing African American graduates who go on to receive science and engineering PhDs, 1st in the nation in producing African American graduates who go on to receive life sciences PhDs., and 7th in the nation in producing African American graduates who go on to receive physical sciences PhDs. Xavier is nationally renowned for its Premed and Pharmacy programs.
At Xavier, we surround our students with a network of support system to maximize their chances to succeed and achieve their goals. The Office of Career Services assists students in finding internships and securing permanent employment after graduation. The Office of Graduate Placement provides assistance to students in getting admission in graduate programs. The Center for International and Intercultural Programs provides study abroad opportunities. The Student Academic Success Office provides academic support through various resource centers in biology, chemistry, mathematics, reading, and writing.
Xavier is located in New Orleans, considered to be America’s most interesting city. The city is a hub for young people who come from all over the world to study in one of the six universities. The city is also attracting a lot of young entrepreneurs, especially in the high tech sector. New Orleans is the home for Jazz Fest and Mardi Gras. New Orleans boasts of having both – NFL (Saints) and NBA (Pelicans) teams.
