Dr. Patience Obih, an Associate Professor of Pharmacology, joined Xavier University College of Pharmacy in 1988. She received her Ph.D. degree from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria in 1981. For her Ph.D. she researched on the mechanisms of the actions of antimalarial agents on P. berghei berghei and P. falciparum in in vivo and in vitro models. She spent two years at Duke University Medical Center, North Carolina as Post -doctoral/Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology (1986-1988) where she also studied the profile and bioavailability of gossipol in male Fisher-344 rats and B6C3F male mice. She also has researched on aquatic toxicology, and currently, her research focus is on the modulation of immune system by ethanol in collaboration with Louisiana State University on a grant funded by NIAAA. Dr. Obih has presented several papers and published many articles in refereed journals.

Dr. Obih has over twenty years of teaching experience in pharmacology during which she has taught pharmacology to science, medical, nursing, and pharmacy students. Within ten years of her appointment at Xavier University, she was voted four times as the best teacher of the year in the College of Pharmacy. She is the College of Pharmacy Graduate Student Advisor helping to place pharmacy graduates in graduate schools and finding summer research programs for undergraduates for hands-on experience in research.

Dr. Obih is the chairperson for the College of Pharmacy Rank and Tenure Committee. She is also involved in other committees such as Planning Council for Academic affairs, University Research Committee, Committee on Intellectual Property, Strategic Planning Committee for College of Pharmacy, GradStar Liaison and AACP Graduate Liaison for College of Pharmacy.
