In the Mississippi Valley,
In the Crescent Bend
Stands our loved and noble Xavier,
Far her praises send.
Refrain:
Wave her colors bear them onward
Gold and white so true
Hail to thee, all hail, dear Xavier
Hail, all hail, X.U.!
Xavier, ever be our guide
And lead us on the way,
Through life's journey, onward, upward
To the eternal day. (Refrain)

NAIA Division I National Championship — First Round
Xavier Gold Nuggets (28-5) vs. Cumberland Patriots (25-8)
Thursday, March 18, 2010, 4:30 p.m. CDT
Oman Arena (capacity 5,600), Jackson, Tenn.
|
• Briefly: Xavier has a 21-game win streak but has
lost five in a row at nationals since a 64-55 first-round victory over
Trevecca Nazarene on March 20, 2003 . . . A Xavier victory against
Cumberlands would tie the program record of 22 consecutive victories
set in 1997-98 . . . The Gold Nuggets and Patriots will meet on the
second day of the tournament and in the 13th of 16 first-round games.
• Series: First meeting. Xavier is 2-2 against current members
of the Mid-South Conference (1-0 Rio Grande, 1-0 West Virginia Tech,
0-1 Campbellsville, 0-1 Lindsey Wilson). Both XU losses occurred on
consecutive days at The Barn early this year — Lindsey Wilson
defeated the Nuggets 53-51 on Jan. 2, then Campbellsville won 71-70 the
following day. In both games Xavier had double-digit leads, and Lindsey
Wilson outscored Xavier 10-0 in the final 6:22. Like Cumberlands, both
Lindsey Wilson and Campbellsville qualified for nationals. Xavier
has won 21 straight since the loss to Campbellsville.
• Rankings: Cumberlands was 16th, and Xavier was 20th in the final
NAIA Division I coaches poll announced March 2.
• Seedings: Cumberlands is fourth and Xavier fifth in their
eight-team quadrant. There are 32 teams at the Division I tourney.
• In Conference: Xavier was 18-0 and finished first in the 10-team Gulf Coast
Athletic Conference. The Nuggets went 3-0 in the conference tournament, beating
regular-season runner-up LSU-Shreveport 56-51 in the final . . .
Cumberlands was 11-3 and placed second in the eight-team Mid-South
Conference, then went 3-0 in the conference tournament with a 73-68
victory over regular-season champion Campbellsville in the championship game.
• Next: The Xavier-Cumberlands winner will play St. Xavier or
Evangel in the second round at 8 p.m. Friday. St. Xavier and Evangel
will play at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, immediately following the Xavier-Cumberlands game.
Xavier is 2-0 against St. Xavier and 0-0 against Evangel. The Nuggets are 8-8 against
the teams in their half of the bracket, including victories against
Lee (Tenn.), Langston and Lubbock Christian.
• Most Recently: Xavier turned five steals into baskets during a late 13-2 burst that rallied the Nuggets
to a 56-51 victory over LSU-Shreveport in the championship game of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference
Tournament at The Barn. Brittany Powell scored 19 points and Jazmoné Kelly nine for Xavier.
Both grabbed eight rebounds and produced four steals. Brandi Young's right-side 3-pointer at
2:12 gave the Nuggets a 52-48 lead and made it a two-or-more possession game the rest of the way.
• Back in Tennessee: This is the fifth consecutive time that
Xavier has played in the NAIA Division I National Championship with a
Tennessee resident on the roster. Junior guard Ashley McGill (Memphis/Northside High School)
is in her second trip to nationals.
• Shooting for Improvement: The Nuggets shot a collective 33.8 percent
from the floor (156-of-462) in their last seven games at the NAIA tourney. The best
performance of the seven was 39.1 percent in a first-round victory over Trevecca Nazarene
in the 2003. The other six games, not surprisingly, were Xavier losses.
• Two of the Best: Xavier leads NAIA Division I
in scoring defense (51.7), and Cumberlands is No. 1 in 3-point field-goal
percentage defense (.244).
• All-Conference: Brittany Powell was chosen GCAC Player of the Year and was a repeat All-GCAC selection.
Jasmine Grant was the fourth XU sophomore in 11 seasons to make the team.
Bo Browder was Coach of the Year for the third time — first time since 2003-04.
• Also Notable:
~ Fourteen of Xavier's last 16 teams qualified for the NAIA tourney.
The exceptions were in 1999-2000 and 2008-09. The streak does not include the 2005-06 season,
when Xavier suspended athletics in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
~ Xavier reached 20 victories for the 17th time in 18 seasons
and set a school record with their ninth consecutive 20-win season.
~ The Gold Nuggets became the second Gulf Coast Athletic Conference
women's team to finish 18-0 in conference. The first to do it was Xavier’s 1997-98 team.
~ Xavier allowed less than 50 points in a school-record six
consecutive games Jan 28-Feb. 11.
~ Just three of Xavier's 11 players previously traveled
to Jackson for nationals: senior LaTashia Wise (2007 and 2008) and juniors
Danielle Jones (2008) and Ashley McGill (2008).
~ Xavier is 5-13 in its previous 13 appearances at nationals
and never has advanced to the quarterfinals. The first-round victories occurred
in 1995 (87-75 vs. Salem International), 1996 (84-50 vs. Claflin), 1997
(77-52 vs. LeTourneau), 1998 (70-66 vs. Georgia Southwestern) and 2003
(64-55 vs. Trevecca Nazarene). The Gold Nuggets are 0-4 in the first round
since the victory against Trevecca.
~ Xavier's five losses this season were by a combined
13 points (average 2.6). The Gold Nuggets held double-digit leads in each of
the final four losses.
