Slick surfaces prevent XU, SLU from completing dual
February 23, 2014

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's women's dual against Southeastern Louisiana was suspended at approximately 10 p.m. Sunday because of slick and unplayable surfaces at XU Tennis Center.
Southeastern led 4-3 at the time of the suspension. There was no team winner, and the dual will not be completed.
The matches, originally scheduled for 1 p.m., were pushed back until 7 because of rain. Fog descended on the facility around 9:30 p.m. and eventually made the courts unsafe for competition.
"There wasn't a problem with visibility from the fog," XU coach Alan Green said. "It was just too slick out there. Some of the players started slipping, so we decided not to continue."
The Gold Nuggets, 3-4 and ranked sixth in the NAIA, won 2-of-3 doubles matches and at the top singles flight in its best-ever performance against the Lady Lions (4-1) of NCAA Division I.
"It was the best effort we've shown all year," said Green, whose Nuggets reached the NAIA's national semifinals a year ago. "Best doubles we've played. It was our smartest shot-making of the season."
Xavier took a 2-1 lead into singles after Nour Abbes and Kourtney Howell defeated Reginka Nychytailova and Renee Villarreal 8-1 at No. 1 doubles and Amber Brown and Simone-Alyse Ewell beat Adriana Castillo and Margaux Kattenbacher 8-3 at No. 3. SLU's Anna Bryukhova and Valya Rusakova averted an XU doubles sweep, saving two match points while trailing 8-7 and rallying for a 9-8 (7-4) victory against Brion Flowers and Brandi Nelson.
Abbes improved to 6-0 in singles with a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Villarreal. Howell and Nelson won first sets against their opponents, but neither won matches. Howell's match with Nastya Tokareva was headed to a third set when the dual was suspended, and Nelson retired because of injury after trailing Nychytailova 5-7, 6-0, 2-1.
Xavier lost 7-0 to SLU each of the past two seasons and 9-0 in 2011.
The Gold Nuggets will travel to Mobile, Ala., to play No. 5 Brenau in a neutral dual at the University of Mobile. It will be Xavier's third meeting of the season with a ranked NAIA team.
