2014 schedules: Another tough road for Rush, Nuggets

January 22, 2014

NEW ORLEANS — Another schedule filled with NAIA National Championship qualifiers from a year ago and NCAA Division I opponents awaits the Xavier University of Louisiana men's and women's tennis teams in 2014.
Alan Green, in his 11th season as coach of the Gold Rush and Gold Nuggets, announced Wednesday the spring portion of the schedules.
Xavier's men — 15-8 in 2013, an NAIA national quarterfinalist each of the past two seasons and No. 5 in the postseason coaches poll — will open their season at 3 p.m. on Jan. 31 at NCAA Division I Nicholls State. Both XU teams will play their home opener at 2 p.m. on Feb. 7 against city rival Loyola at the XU Tennis Center.
The Gold Nuggets were 19-8 last season and became the first XU team in any sport to reach the NAIA semifinals. They were ranked No. 1 in three consecutive polls and finished at No. 3.
NAIA National Championship qualifiers from 2013 on the XU schedules are:
Men and Women:  Auburn Montgomery, Cumberland, Lindsey Wilson and William Carey.
     Men Only:  Belhaven and Graceland.
     Women Only:  Brenau.
NCAA Division I opponents will be:
Men and Women:  Alabama State, Alcorn State, Louisiana-Lafayette and Prairie View A&M.
Men Only:  Jackson State, Nicholls State and Troy.
Women Only:  McNeese State, Oral Roberts, Southeastern Louisiana, Southern and Tulane.
The XU men also will visit West Florida, an NCAA Division II national semifinalist in 2013.
The Gold Nuggets will play four home duals against NCAA Division I opponents: Alabama State, Oral Roberts, Prairie View and Southeastern Louisiana. A home highlight for both XU teams will be April 5 against Auburn Montgomery, whose women won the 2013 NAIA national championship and whose men finished second.
Xavier will play host to the NAIA Unaffiliated Group tournaments for men and women April 25-26, with the winning teams qualifying automatically for the NAIA National Championship on May 13-17 at Mobile, Ala.
It will be the second season of the XU Tennis Center, a $2.5 million facility which opened in October 2012.
Four All-Americans — Nikita Soifer and Kyle Montrel on the men's team, Kourtney Howell and Brion Flowers on the women's — return for Xavier. Green was the Wilson/ITA NAIA Women's National Coach of the Year in 2013, and he won Region IV Coach of the Year awards for men and women. Last year the Rush defeated four NCAA D-I opponents and six ranked NAIA teams, and the Nuggets beat three NCAA D-I opponents and 12 ranked NAIA teams.
