Gold Nuggets rally past No. 10 Talladega in second half

     NEW ORLEANS — Chelsea Broussard scored all 10 of her points in the second half Monday to help Xavier University of Louisiana rally for a 66-50 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference women's basketball victory against NAIA No. 10 Talladega.
     The Gold Nuggets (15-6, 5-0) are the only unbeaten team in the GCAC. They ended the five-game winning streak of the Lady Tornadoes (16-2, 3-1), who had not lost since Dec. 14.
     Broussard made the most of her seven second-half minutes, going 5-of-5 from the floor with four rebounds and two blocked shots.
     Vinnie Briggs led Xavier with 15 points. Carmen Holcombe had nine points, eight rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals for the Gold Nuggets.
     Jamie Robinson led Talladega with 15 points and nine rebounds. Ryann Drear had eight points and nine rebounds, and Ryven Jackson grabbed 12 rebounds.
     Arielle George's 3-pointer at 8:12 of the first half gave Talladega a 22-10 lead, but Xavier trimmed the margin to 27-26 by halftime. Holcombe passed to Whitney Gathright for a basket in the opening minute of the second half which put the Gold Nuggets ahead to stay, 28-27. The final margin was Xavier's largest of the game.
     Xavier outshot Talladega 41.3 to 25.8 percent from the floor for the game, 53.1 to 22.6 in the second half. Talladega was 3-of-25 from the floor in the final 14 minutes.
     The victory was the Gold Nuggets' second of the season against a ranked opponent. They've won 14 straight home games dating to January 2013.
     Xavier's next game will start at 5 p.m. Saturday against longtime rival Dillard in the Crosstown Classic at XU's Convocation Center.
