Wiley holds off Dillard, finishes 2-0 in Xavier Classic

     NEW ORLEANS — Danisha Shaw scored a season-high 15 points Friday to help Wiley earn a 73-64 women's basketball victory against Dillard in the final game of the Xavier Classic at the Convocation Center.
     Wiley (6-1) and Xavier both finished 2-0 in the six-team event.
     Shaw scored in double figures for the third consecutive game. She had five rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals. Shaw made 4-of-4 free throws in the final 69 seconds.
     Chinwendu Mbah had 14 points, five rebounds and two blocks for Wiley. Mbah and Shaw both scored 10 second-half points.
     The Wildcats trailed 8-3 before Shaw scored five points and assisted on a basket during a 22-5 run which gave them their biggest lead, 25-13. Wiley led 31-25 at halftime and pulled away late after Dillard (0-5) cut the margin to one point three times in the final eight minutes.
     Alena Evans, in her first game of the season, scored 17 points for Dillard, and Jazzmin Smith had 16 points, six rebounds, three assists, two blocks and four steals.
     Wiley made 15-of-16 second-half free throws to finish 20-of-24.
     Dillard lost both its Xavier Classic games and lost to Wiley for the second time this season.

The Xavier Gold Rush and Gold Nuggets compete in Division I of the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) as a member of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC). Xavier fields men's teams in basketball, cross country, tennis and track and field and women's teams in basketball, cross country, tennis, track and field and volleyball.
