Texas College beats Dillard for first victory of the season

NEW ORLEANS — Keyara Criner scored a career-high
25 points and grabbed a season-best 12 rebounds Thursday to lead Texas College to a
71-63 women's basketball victory against Dillard in the Xavier Classic at
Xavier University of Louisiana's Convocation Center.
The Lady Steers (1-3) got double-doubles from Criner,
Shirley McGowen (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Ashli Smith (10 points, 10 rebounds).
Sekeya Roberson grabbed 11 rebounds for Texas College, which outrebounded
Dillard 61-42.
Criner scored eight points in the first 4:47 to give
Texas College a 15-0 lead. Dillard (0-4) reduced the margin to 33-31 late in the
first half but came no closer. Texas College regained the momentum by scoring
the first 11 points of the second half, seven by Connie Espinas, who finished with 10.
Roberson also had eight assists.
Shea Collins scored 13 points and made all three of
Dillard's 3-pointers. Jazzmin Smith and Brionne Brister scored 12 points apiece,
and Je'nae Strong scored 11. Smith and Brister each had seven rebouunds.
Mo'Nique Waiters had five steals.
Texas College outshot Dillard 40.3 to 29.6 percent from the floor. It was the
third consecutive game that the Lady Bleu Devils shot less than 30 percent.
The Lady Steers snapped their six-game Xavier Classic losing streak.
They had not won in this event since beating Dillard and Tougaloo in 2006.
On Friday, Texas College will play Xavier at 2:30 p.m.,
and Dillard will play Wiley at 6 p.m.
