Carruthers leads Wiley in Xavier Classic rout of Tuskegee

NEW ORLEANS — Aliesha Carruthers scored 18 of her
22 points in the first half Thursday, leading Wiley to an 88-62 women's basketball victory
against Tuskegee in the opening game of the Xavier Classic at Xavier University of
Louisiana's new Convocation Center.
Carruthers scored 11 points in the first five minutes
to give the Wildcats (5-1) an 18-10 lead. Wiley led 55-33 at halftime and
80-45 after Kyniddia Purdy's basket with 7:09 remaining.
Carruthers finished 9-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-4
from the line in 21 minutes and scored in double figures for the sixth time
in as many games. Purdy scored a season-high 14 points, Danisha Shaw 12 and
Chinwendu Mbah and Jean Spears 10 apiece for Wiley, an NAIA member. Latika Smith had 10 of
the Wildcats' 29 assists. Mbah blocked four shots and had three steals.
Tuskegee (1-3), and NCAA Division II member, had no
double-figure scorers. Amelia Dorton scored nine points for the Tigerettes, and
Torreece Maxey had eight points, 11 rebounds, three assists and five blocked shots.
Wiley outshot Tuskegee 47.9 to 42.4 percent from the floor
and had a 29-4 advantage in points off turnovers. The Wildcats gained 37 turnovers,
19 on steals. Ten Wiley players had steals, led by Kayla Brown's four.
On Friday, Tuskegee will play Langston at 11 a.m.,
and Wiley will play Dillard at 6 p.m.
