ALMA MATER
In the Mississippi Valley,
In the Crescent Bend
Stands our loved and noble Xavier,
Far her praises send.
Refrain:
Wave her colors bear them onward
Gold and white so true
Hail to thee, all hail, dear Xavier
Hail, all hail, X.U.!
Xavier, ever be our guide
And lead us on the way,
Through life's journey, onward, upward
To the eternal day. (Refrain)

NORCROSS, Ga. — Sophomores Kourtney Howell and Nicole DeLoach won in doubles and singles Saturday to rally Xavier University of Louisiana to a 5-2 women's tennis victory against Milligan in the semifinals of an NAIA unaffiliated group tournament.
Xavier defeated Bethel (Tenn.) 5-0 in the men's semifinals.
Both XU teams will play Saturday afternoon for championships and automatic berths to next month's NAIA National Championships. The Gold Rush (16-7), seeded first and the defending champion, will play second-seeded Cumberland at 1 p.m. The Gold Nuggets (6-21), seeded second, will play top-seeded Martin Methodist at 1:15 p.m. EDT.
It was the first time since March 2008 that the XU women won after losing the first two matches played. Howell and DeLoach got a point for the Nuggets with their 8-6 victory against Albany Kelly and Celeste Carpenter at No. 2 doubles. Then Xavier took control in singles, winning four matches in a row while dropping a combined nine games. DeLoach beat Carpenter 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 to put the Nuggets ahead to stay, and Howell clinched with a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Kayla Kelly at the top flight.
Freshman Amanda Materre and sophomore Amber Brown also won in straight sets for the Nuggets, who won for the second day in a row after winning just four times in the regular season against a rigorous schedule which included 11 ranked NAIA opponents and 10 NCAA Division I opponents. They avenged a 5-0 semifinal loss to Milligan from last season's unaffiliated tournament.
The Gold Rush shut out Bethel for the second
consecutive year in the semifinals. Zach Taylor and Loic Didavi accounted for
three of the points, including an 8-0 No. 1 doubles victory against Peter Baca and Kristian Takac
and Taylor's 6-0, 6-0 victory against Paolo Vecchi at No. 2 singles.
Didavi clinched with a 6-2, 6-3 decision against Baca at the top flight.
The doubles teams of Steffen Giles-Osborn and
Sean Richardson and Viktor Svoboda and Corey Huggins scored the other points.
The XU men reached the championship round of a conference/group
tournament for the 10th consecutive season. The Nuggets reached the final
for the 10th time in 11 seasons.
