No. 8 Westmont rallies for 5-4 win against No. 14 Xavier

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Three days after its
first-ever victory against a top-10 NAIA opponent, the Xavier University of Louisiana
men's tennis team suffered one of its most disappointing losses.
Eighth-ranked Westmont won the final three matches and
defeated No. 14 Xavier 5-4 Monday.
Carlos Lima clinched the dual for Westmont (2-3) with a
6-7 (7-1), 6-3, 6-1 victory against Zach Taylor at No. 1 singles. Freshman Jonathan
Aubrey and senior Hassan Abbas scored points in doubles and singles for Xavier (8-3),
which lost for the first time in four duals. Abbas gave the Gold Rush a 4-2 lead when
he defeated Bryan Cox 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2 singles. He also won at No. 1 doubles with
Taylor, beating Lima and Lukas Zielen 8-6.
Aubrey and Amir Rahbar beat Tiago Hayashi and Kent
Stormans 8-1 at No. 3 doubles, then Aubrey gave the Gold Rush a 3-1 lead when he
defeated Seth Grotelueschen 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
Xavier won 6-3 Friday at No. 7 Vanguard. The Gold Rush
are 2-1 this season against top-25 NAIA opponents.
XU's men will play NCAA Division I opponent Radford at
10 a.m. Wednesday at City Park Tennis Center in New Orleans, then travel with the Gold
Nuggets to Montgomery, Ala., for the AUM Invitational, a three-day event beginning
Friday.
