In the Mississippi Valley,
In the Crescent Bend
Stands our loved and noble Xavier,
Far her praises send.
Refrain:
Wave her colors bear them onward
Gold and white so true
Hail to thee, all hail, dear Xavier
Hail, all hail, X.U.!
Xavier, ever be our guide
And lead us on the way,
Through life's journey, onward, upward
To the eternal day. (Refrain)

NEW ORLEANS — Christina Warren
of Xavier University of Louisiana was selected Gulf Coast Athletic
Conference Player of the Year in women's basketball, and she was
joined by teammates Keldra Hall and Jazmoné Kelly on the
10-player all-conference team.
Hall was chosen Newcomer of the Year,
and Bo Browder repeated as Coach of the Year.
The conference awards, chosen by the
league's
|
head coaches, were announced Wednesday on the eve
of the GCAC Tournament at Jacksonville, Fla. Xavier is the No. 1
seed and will play Dillard or host Edward Waters in the semifinals
at 2 p.m. EST Friday. Dillard, the No. 4 seed, will play fifth-seeded
Edward Waters at 6 p.m. EST Thursday.
Warren, a 5-foot-9 senior forward/guard from
Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., and a graduate of Los Osos High School and
Chaffey College, leads the Gold Nuggets with 12 points per game,
36 made 3-pointers and an .817 free-throw percentage. She
was GCAC Player of the Week three times this season.
"Christina did a great stop stepping up
and becoming our No. 1 option on offense when we lost Jasmine Grant
to injury in November," Browder said.
It's the second consecutive season that
an XU senior was chosen GCAC Player of the Year. Brittany Powell won
in 2009-10.
Hall, a 6-foot junior center from
Dallas and a graduate of Molina High School and Angelina College,
is averaging 8.3 points and leads the Gold Nuggets with 7.4 rebounds
per game and 27 blocked shots. Her 97 offensive rebounds are the
most by an XU female in four seasons.
"Keldra was the main reason our inside game
improved so much this season," Browder said. "Last season we barely
outrebounded our opponents. This season our rebound margin is plus-7.6.
Keldra thinks she can get every missed shot, and that attitude
is contagious."
Kelly, a 5-9 junior guard/forward and a graduate
of Cincinnati's Ursuline Academy, is averaging 7.1 points and 4.3 rebounds.
She needs one steal to become the first Gold Nugget since Jackie Tucker
in 2003-04 with 60 offensive rebounds, 60 assists and 60 steals in the
same season.
"Jazmoné Kelly is the pulse of our team," Browder
said. "She's our team captain, and she's given us outstanding leadership
on and off the court this season."
Browder, 295-101 in 12 seasons as the Nuggets'
head coach, has guided his team to a 24-6 record. The XU women extended
their win streak in conference games to 24, and they've been ranked
in every NAIA Division I top 25 this season. They're 20th this week.
"It's always gratifying to be recognized by your
peers," said Browder, who's won four GCAC coaching awards.
"But this award reflects more on my hard-working players and the great
support I receive from our athletic director, Mr. (Dennis) Cousin,
my associate head coach, Darrilyn Broussard, and the Xavier administration."
