NEW ORLEANS — Tulane won five of seven matches
without dropping a game Saturday and defeated Xavier University of Louisiana 7-0
at Goldring Stadium in the first women's tennis dual match of the season for both schools.
Xavier, a perennial power in the NAIA, had five available players and forfeited
the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches to NCAA Division I Tulane.
The most competitive match was at No. 1 doubles, where
Mariam Kurdadze and Emma Levy defeated Xavier's Amber Brown and Carmen Nelson 8-3.
Brown won the only other game for XU in a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Levy at No. 2 singles.
Nelson, a sophomore who played No. 3 singles most of
last season, lost 6-0, 6-0 to Kurdadze at No. 1.
It was the first XU dual match for Brown, a freshman,
and the collegiate debut of freshman teammate Nicole DeLoach. Emma Helisten defeated
DeLoach 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4, and DeLoach's older sister, Melissa, lost by the same score
to Lindsay Dvorak. Helisten and Dvorak blanked the DeLoach sisters in doubles.
Hila Elster shut out senior Ashley McGill at No. 5,
but McGill's day of competition wasn't over. She was expected to play for
the 16th-ranked XU women's basketball team in its game at unbeaten SUNO later in the afternoon.
McGill played for both teams last season.
Xavier's women and men will play city rival Loyola
at noon Sunday at the University of New Orleans Tennis Center.
