Grant ties school record; Gold Nuggets win again
November 19, 2010
NEW ORLEANS — Jasmine Grant made a
school-record-tying seven 3-point field goals and scored a career-best 23
points Friday, leading NAIA No. 22 Xavier University of Louisiana to an 86-33
women's basketball victory over Paul Quinn.
The Gold Nuggets (5-0), playing at home for the first
time in three weeks, have won 26 of their last 27 games overall and 96 times
in their last 102 appearances at The Barn.
Grant was 7-of-9 from behind the arc in 16 minutes
and 4-of-4 from long range in the first 2:06 of the second half to extend
Xavier's 42-15 halftime lead to 54-17. Grant left the game for good with 14:57 remaining.
"My teammates kept telling me to shoot it," said Grant,
a 5-foot-8 junior guard from Shreveport, La., and an All-Gulf Coast Athletic
Conference selection last season. "My role is bigger on the team this year.
My teammates are depending on me to play well, and I know I can't afford to
have any bad games."
Courtney Simon set the XU record for 3-pointers in a
game against Belhaven on Feb. 18, 1989. Jarryn Cleaves tied the mark against Mobile
on Feb. 8, 2007.
"Jasmine is coming into her own," said 12th-year Xavier
Coach Bo Browder. "She was the best guard in the state when we signed her. I
think she'll have breakout years these next two years."
Christina Warren added 12 points for Xavier, and
freshman Chelsea Broussard had eight points and 10 rebounds. Marchelle Jones
matched her career best of seven steals.
The Nuggets gained 35 turnovers, 27 on steals, and
limited Paul Quinn (2-4) to 27.7 percent from the floor.
"Our defense stayed consistent," Browder said.
Jasmine Hammond led Paul Quinn with nine points, and
Johnicka Morton grabbed eight rebounds.
Xavier shot 41.7 percent from the floor, outrebounded
the Lady Tigers 57-30 and finished with 10 3-pointers, one less than the
school record. Warren made a pair of 3s, and walk-on Etheral Lesene scored the other.
Xavier won't have much time to savor the victory.
The Nuggets will play Philander Smith at noon Saturday in the The Barn in the
opener of a homecoming doubleheader. XU's men's team will play Philander Smith
at 2 p.m.
