In the Mississippi Valley,
In the Crescent Bend
Stands our loved and noble Xavier,
Far her praises send.
Refrain:
Wave her colors bear them onward
Gold and white so true
Hail to thee, all hail, dear Xavier
Hail, all hail, X.U.!
Xavier, ever be our guide
And lead us on the way,
Through life's journey, onward, upward
To the eternal day. (Refrain)

NEW ORLEANS — For the second time this fall,
Xavier University of Louisiana has swept the Gulf Coast Athletic
Conference's three weekly student-athlete awards.
Matt Pieri is the GCAC Runner of the Week in
men's cross country for the fifth time this season. Anna D'Souza is the
Runner of the Week in women's cross country for the first time, and
Sierra Lyons is the Player of the Week in women's volleyball for the second time.
Pieri, a sophomore from New Orleans and a graduate
|
of Brother Martin High School, set an XU men's record with his sixth career Runner of the Week award and tied Mark Dotson (2009) for
the most in one season. He ran three miles in 16 minutes, 14 seconds
at the Demon Invitational in Natchitoches, La., on Friday and had his fastest per-mile
pace of the season.
D'Souza, a junior from Baton Rouge, La., and a graduate of St. Michael High School,
ran three miles in 20:42 to finish 13th at the Demon Invitational and lead Xavier to a
fourth-place finish out of eight teams. The Gold Nuggets finished ahead of
NCAA Division I members Louisiana Tech and Centenary. D'Souza was just a half-second
from her fastest per-mile pace of the season.
Lyons, a freshman from Houma, La., and a graduate of
Terrebonne High School, averaged 3.1 kills per set and had a .463 hitting
percentage to lead the Gold Nuggets to a 3-1 record, including a school-record
three-match win streak. Lyons had 16 kills, seven digs, three blocks and two aces
in Xavier's 15-25, 19-25, 25-12, 25-22, 15-7 home victory against Dillard on
Saturday and scored five of Xavier's final six points on kills.
Xavier's next volleyball match will start at
6 p.m. Thursday at The Barn against Mobile. XU's cross country teams will compete
Nov. 5 in the NAIA National Championships qualifying meet/GCAC Championships
at Nashville, Tenn.
