Lyons' late kills cap Xavier comeback against Dillard
October 23, 2010
NEW ORLEANS — Sierra Lyons scored five of Xavier
University of Louisiana's final six points with kills Saturday to complete a
15-25, 19-25, 25-12, 25-22, 15-7 women's volleyball victory over Dillard at The Barn.
The Gold Nuggets (8-22 overall, 3-3 Gulf Coast
Athletic Conference) defeated the Lady Bleu Devils (16-8, 3-1) for the first
time in seven meetings and earned their first victory after trailing by two sets.
Lyons, a freshman from Houma, La., and a graduate of
Terrebonne High School, finished with 16 kills, her second most of the season.
She also served two aces and had seven digs and three blocks.
Erin Vincent added 12 kills, 12 digs and five aces for Xavier,
which set a school record with its third consecutive victory, and Danielle Jones
had a season-best eight kills.
Krista Hall and Valencia Wise had 10 kills apiece for
Dillard, which lost for the third time in 11 matches. Monica Barros de Alcantara
had eight kills, five aces and eight digs.
Barros de Alcantara had three aces and two kills
during an 11-0 first-set run, and Dillard added six aces in the second set to
extend its advantage. But Xavier raced to a 17-6 lead en route to winning the
third set, and two Vincent aces and two Lyons kills helped the Nuggets erase a
19-17 fourth-set deficit and send the match to the fifth.
Four Dillard attack errors keyed a 7-2 run in the
fifth which put Xavier ahead to stay. Wise's kill cut Xavier's lead to 9-6,
but Lyons closed with her barrage of kills and scored the Nuggets' final three points.
Xavier served one ace in the first two sets but
had 11 aces in the final three sets.
It was the final GCAC regular-season match for Xavier,
which will play home matches against Mobile at 6 p.m. Thursday and Loyola at 7 p.m.
on Nov. 8. Dillard has two GCAC matches remaining, including Tougaloo at home at 7
p.m. Tuesday, and will play host to the conference tournament Nov. 12-13.
