GCAC coaches pick Gold Nuggets to repeat as champion

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana,
the defending champion of Gulf Coast Athletic Conference women's basketball,
was picked to repeat its success in a preseason coaches poll announced Tuesday.
The Gold Nuggets received four first-place votes
and 24 points. SUNO and Tougaloo received the other first-place votes,
with SUNO outscoring Tougaloo 18-17 for the No. 2 spot.
It's the eighth time in nine seasons that the Nuggets finished
in the top two of the coaches poll.
Xavier last season became the second women's team
— Xavier in 1997-98 was the first — to go 18-0 in GCAC
regular-season games. And like the 1997-98 team, the Nuggets followed
with three more victories and the GCAC Tournament title.
Xavier finished 28-6 in 2009-10, reaching 20
victories for the 17th time in 18 seasons and qualifying for the NAIA
Division I National Championship for the 14th time in 16 seasons.
The Nuggets return seven letterwomen, including
All-GCAC Jasmine Grant and starters Marchelle Jones, Jazmoné Kelly and Danielle Kennebrew.
They'll open the season Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. against Florida Memorial at
The Barn.
