XU doubles teams still alive in NAIA South Regional

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana
won seven of its 14 matches Friday in the USTA/ITA NAIA South Regional
Championships at the University of New Orleans Tennis Center.
Still contending in the main draw are the
women's doubles team of Carmen Nelson and Amber Brown and the men's doubles
team of Sean Richardson and Amir Rahbar. Nelson and Brown advanced to
the semifinals with an 8-4 victory over William Carey's Maja Vuzem and
Anastasia Khabirobva. Richardson and Rahbar defeated William Carey's
Pedro Moreno and Duffy Loel 8-4 to reach the quarterfinals, where they'll
play Auburn Montgomery's second-seeded Bruno Savi and Claudio Andrade at
noon Saturday.
Brown, Richardson, Rahbar, Jonathan Aubrey and
Melissa DeLoach all won first-round singles matches, but all were eliminated
in the next round. Rahbar, seeded eighth, dropped the final nine games in a
7-5, 6-0 loss to Savi after defeating Spring Hill's Chris Link 6-0, 6-1.
Richardson beat Loyola's Jordan Hunting 6-0, 6-0,
then lost 6-2, 6-3 to AUM's seventh-seeded Zine Jouini. Aubrey defeated Moreno
6-3, 6-1 before losing 6-3, 6-2 to AUM's second-seeded Loic Didavi.
Brown defeated Spring Hill's Paige Malone 6-0, 6-1,
then lost 6-0, 6-0 to AUM's Morgane Zowczak. DeLoach defeated Spring Hill's
McCall Hedrick 6-4, 6-1 and lost 6-0, 6-0 to top-seeded Ana Veselenovic of AUM.
Nelson, who had a first-round bye, lost 6-1, 6-0 to SCAD Atlanta's fifth-seeded
Daniela Vukadinovic, then lost 8-1 to William Carey's Petra Pesic in the
consolation bracket.
The top five men's seeds reached the quarterfinals.
AUM's top-seeded Boris Obama beat Loyola's Joshua Washington 6-0, 6-0 and William
Carey's Toni Gauta 7-5, 6-4. Six of the eight men's quarterfinalists are from AUM,
which won the NAIA national championship in May. Obama will play Jouini at 9 a.m.
Veselenovic beat teammake Kvetka Hajkova 6-3, 6-0 to
reach a noon semifinal match. AUM's second-seeded Jade Curtis, a 6-0, 7-5 winner
over Zowczak, will play Brenau's third-seeded Lyn See Choo in the other semifinal
at 9 a.m.
