XU's Pieri named GCAC Runner of the Week
September 8, 2010
NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's
Matt Pieri is the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Runner of the Week in
men's cross country for Aug. 30-Sept. 5.
Pieri, a sophomore from New Orleans and a 2009 graduate
of Brother Martin High School, ran four miles in 22 minutes, 46.10 seconds
Friday to place 11th in the season-opening Southern Miss Invitational at
Hattiesburg, Miss. His time ranks 10th on XU's all-time list at that distance.
It's the second time in 10 collegiate meets that
Pieri was Xavier's fastest finisher. It's the 10th time in three years that a
Xavier male runner won the GCAC award and the second time for Pieri.

Nominations and voting for the GCAC's weekly
athlete awards are conducted by the conference's sports information directors.
Xavier will compete Saturday in the Radisson Hotel
Wolfpack Classic at Lafreniere Park in suburban Metairie, La. The women's race
will start at 8 a.m., followed by the men's race at 8:35. Both races
will cover 5,000 meters (3.1 miles). Other colleges scheduled to compete are
Belhaven, Dillard, Loyola, Millsaps, Mobile, Spring Hill and William Carey.
