Xavier teams will run four times in Louisiana this season
August 12, 2010

NEW ORLEANS — For the second consecutive year, four Louisiana meets are part of the Xavier University of Louisiana men's and women's cross country schedules.
Sixth-year Coach Joseph Moses announced the 2010 schedules Thursday.
The Gold Rush and Gold Nuggets, both four-time defending champions of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference, will open the season September 3 in the Southern Miss Invitational at Hattiesburg, Miss. Then four of XU's next five meets will be in Louisiana, including the Radisson Hotel Wolfpack Classic at Lafreniere Park in suburban Metairie on Sept. 11 — Xavier's only local meet of the year — and the LSU Invitational at Baton Rouge on Sept. 25.
The other Louisiana meets will be the ASICS McNeese Cowboy Stampede at Lake Charles on Oct. 9 and the Demon Invitational at Natchitoches on Oct. 22.
The GCAC Championships and the qualifying meet for the NAIA National Championships will be run concurrently Nov. 5 at Percy Warner Park in Nashville, Tenn. Xavier will get an early look at that course when it competes Sept. 18 in Vanderbilt's Commodore Classic.
This year the GCAC does not field the requisite six men's or six women's cross country programs to automatically qualify its team champions for the NAIA National Championships, but eligible GCAC teams will run in a qualifying meet for nationals against TranSouth Athletic Conference members Bethel (Tenn.), Blue Mountain, Freed-Hardeman, Trevecca Nazarene and Union (Tenn.) and Association of Independent Institutions members Allen, Morris, Voorhees and Warren Wilson.
The NAIA National Championships will be Nov. 20 and will be run in Vancouver, Wash., for the second straight year. Both Xavier teams qualified for nationals in 2008 and 2009.
Ray Walston, the defending GCAC men's champion, is among seven returning XU letterwinners. Also back are All-GCAC Matt Pieri on the men's team and All-GCAC women Brianna Dekine, Anna D'Souza and Ashley Taylor.
NOTES:   Xavier erroneously reported Wednesday that Charles Shaw of Birmingham, Ala., would join the men's cross country team for the 2010-11 academic year. XU regrets the error.
