ALMA MATER
In the Mississippi Valley,
In the Crescent Bend
Stands our loved and noble Xavier,
Far her praises send.
Refrain:
Wave her colors bear them onward
Gold and white so true
Hail to thee, all hail, dear Xavier
Hail, all hail, X.U.!
Xavier, ever be our guide
And lead us on the way,
Through life's journey, onward, upward
To the eternal day. (Refrain)

Nuggets advance again to NAIA second round
May 18, 2010
Results
MOBILE, Ala. — For the second time this
postseason, the Xavier University of Louisiana women's tennis team showed its
ability to come back.
The Gold Nuggets trailed 3-1 against Indiana Wesleyan
before rallying for a 6-3 victory Tuesday in the opening round of the NAIA
National Championship at Copeland-Cox Tennis Center.
Xavier (17-13), ranked 19th, won its fifth in a row
and improved to 5-0 all-time in the first round at nationals. The Nuggets will play top-ranked Auburn Montgomery — the six-time
|
defending national
champion — in the second round at 9 a.m. Wednesday. AUM (18-3) had a
first-round bye.
The Nuggets, 1-13 in regular-season duals when
trailing after the doubles matches, dug another hole for themselves when
Melissa DeLoach and Ashley McGill lost 8-3 to Courtney Kooyers and Caitlin
McGuire, then Carmen Nelson and Colleen McArthur lost 8-2 to Andrea Meyering
and Lauren Wilson. The Wildcats (21-4), ranked 17th, took a 3-1 lead after
McGuire's 6-0, 6-0 victory against McGill at No. 6 singles.
"(Indiana Wesleyan) killed us in doubles," Xavier
Coach Alan Green said. "It wasn't even close. We were down 5-0 at (the No.) 2
and 3 (flights)."
All-Americans Anastesia Opata and Angelina Callis
started the Xavier comeback with victories at the top two flights. Callis beat
Meyering 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 for her eighth consecutive singles victory, then
Opata tied the dual with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Lisa Massey. DeLoach
clinched the dual with a 6-1, 6-3 decision against Kooyers at No. 5.
"DeLoach probably played her best match since she's
been at Xavier," Green said of the junior. "She played awesome."
Carmen Nelson and Colleen McArthur earned Xavier's
other singles victories.
Green said the dual reminded him of the Nuggets' 5-3
victory April 30 against Spring Hill in the semifinals of the Gulf Coast
Athletic Conference Tournament — another comeback from a 3-1 deficit. "It
wasn't easy," Green said.
