XU vs. Wesleyan teams at NAIA National Championships

     NEW ORLEANS — The Xavier University of Louisiana tennis teams will play first-round matches next Tuesday (May 18) in the NAIA National Championships at Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala.
     The NAIA announced the pairings Tuesday.
     The XU women (16-13), ranked 19th, will play No. 17 Indiana Wesleyan (21-1) at 9 a.m. XU's men (12-13), ranked 16th, will play 17th-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan (11-4) at 1 p.m.
     Top-ranked teams and defending champions — Fresno Pacific's men and Auburn Montgomery's women — have first-round byes and will await the winners of both matches the following day. AUM seeks its seventh consecutive championship and 10th in 12 years.
     This is the second consecutive year that both Xavier teams qualified for nationals. The Gold Rush never qualified before 2009. The Gold Nuggets are in the tournament for the third straight year and the fifth time in six seasons.
     Neither Xavier team has lost a first-round match at nationals.
     Twenty-four men's teams and 24 women's teams will compete. Both Xavier teams earned automatic bids after winning the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament on May 1.

The Xavier Gold Rush and Gold Nuggets compete in Division I of the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) as a member of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC). Xavier fields men's and women's teams in basketball, cross country and tennis.
