Gold Rush, Gold Nuggets repeat as GCAC champions
May 1, 2010

Results:  Men    Women

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's men's and women's teams swept the doubles matches on their way to repeat championships Saturday in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament at the University of New Orleans Tennis Center.
The Gold Rush, ranked 16th in the NAIA, defeated William Carey 6-1 in the men's final. The Gold Nuggets, ranked 19th, beat No. 20 William Carey 5-1 in the women's final. Xavier's men won their fifth consecutive GCAC championship in six years, and the Nuggets earned their second straight GCAC title and seventh in eight seasons.
Both Xavier teams received automatic bids to the NAIA National Championships on May 18-22 at Mobile, Ala.
Xavier took 3-0 leads into singles competition after Mario Myles and Mikhail Vaval beat Toni Gauta and Steven Georgian 8-4 in men's doubles and Carmen Nelson and Colleen McArthur topped Anastasia Khabirova and Jillian Fletcher 8-3 in women's doubles. Hassan Abbas and McArthur delivered the championship clinchers, with Abbas winning 6-1, 6-0 over Gauta and McArthur defeating Hannah Johnson 6-2, 6-2.
Abbas, a junior in his first year at Xavier, improved to a team-leading 22-8 in singles. McArthur, a senior, clinched for the Nuggets for the second straight round.
Boosting the XU men was the return of senior Cameron Knowles, who missed eight consecutive duals since March 21 because of an injured knee. Knowles teamed with Sean Richardson for an 8-3 victory over Alejandro Ordonez and Devarus Walker, then defaulted his singles match to Ordonez to give the Crusaders (10-8) their only point.
William Carey's women (18-5), losing for the first time in 10 duals, scored their point when Hollie Robinson beat All-America Anastesia Opata 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. But the Nuggets didn't lose any other sets and led in the three unfinished singles matches.
William Carey, playing intercollegiate tennis for the first time since the 1990s, was seeded second to Xavier in both brackets.
Myles, a senior, has contributed to seven GCAC championships — four in tennis and three in cross country. The Nuggets' Ashley McGill picked up her third GCAC title in 11 weeks. She also was a member of XU teams which won conference regular-season and tournament championships in basketball.
McGill and Melissa DeLoach scored the Nuggets' first point Saturday, building a 5-1 lead and holding on for an 8-6 victory against Johnson and Kaci Lancaster. Opata and Callis, ranked ninth in NAIA doubles, won four of their last five games to beat Robinson and Alexandra Kaluza 8-5 and give the Nuggets a 2-0 lead.
Xavier has won 23 GCAC team championships and qualified for 17 NAIA national tournaments during Dennis Cousin's five seasons as athletics director, and it's the first time that Xavier won six conference team championships in one academic year. XU began its record-breaking year by winning the GCAC men's and women's cross country titles in November.
