April 18, 2010

NEW ORLEANS — The Xavier University of Louisiana women's tennis team, ranked 19th in the NAIA, concluded its regular season Sunday with a 9-0 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference victory over LSU-Shreveport.
The Gold Nuggets (13-13 overall, 11-1 GCAC) earned their 10th consecutive conference victory and will be seeded first in the GCAC Tournament on April 30-May 1 at the University of New Orleans Tennis Center, the same site as Sunday's dual.
It was senior day for Xavier's Anastesia Opata, Angelina Callis and Colleen McArthur, and the trio combined to drop one game in singles and doubles.
In doubles Opata and Callis defeated Katie Moak and Priscilla Erickson 8-0, and McArthur and Melissa DeLoach beat Lauren Simmons and Lindsey Crane by the same score.
Opata defeated Erickson 6-0, 6-0, and McArthur posted the same score against Crane. Callis defeated Anne Kelly 6-0, 6-1.
Carmen Nelson and Ashley McGill earned their first singles victories since March 20. Nelson beat Simmons 6-1, 6-0, and McGill won 6-0, 6-1 against Lindsay Bomba. DeLoach beat Ali Lieberman 6-0, 6-0 for her first singles victory since March 30.
For the day Xavier dropped five games. Compared with 9-0 victories in which every match was played, it was the fewest games the Nuggets had lost since Feb. 23, 2008, against Tougaloo.
LSUS is in its first season of intercollegiate tennis. The Lady Pilots followed the loss to Xavier with an 8-1 loss to Loyola at Tulane's Goldring Stadium and dropped to 1-12. All their matches are against GCAC opponents.
Xavier won for the second time in three duals since its season-worst five-dual losing streak. The Nuggets hsave won 64 of their last 65 GCAC regular-season matches.
