NEW ORLEANS — Seniors Anastesia Opata, Angelina
Callis and Colleen McArthur were unbeaten in singles and doubles Tuesday to lead
NAIA No. 19 Xavier University of Louisiana to a 5-2 women's tennis victory over
Alcorn State at the University of New Orleans Tennis Center.
Alcorn State's men defeated NAIA No. 16 Xavier 8-1.
Both duals were scored by NAIA rules.
The Gold Nuggets (12-12) led 2-1 after McArthur and
Melissa DeLoach defeated Kali Sandoval and Nancy Gonzalez 8-2 and Opata and
Callis beat Arielie Buchmann and Katherine Hoepelman 8-2. Alcorn's Dasha Rudd
tied the dual at 2 with a singles shutout of Ashley McGill, but McArthur,
Callis and Opata helped the Nuggets pull away and snap a season-worst
five-dual losing streak.
McArthur ended her eight-match singles losing streak
with a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Sandoval. Callis defeated Hoepelman 6-2, 6-1,
and Opata clinched the dual with a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Buchmann.
It was the Nuggets' first victory of the season
against an NCAA Division I opponent. Alcorn, a 4-3 winner against Xavier a
year ago, is 7-13.
Xavier's men (9-12) scored the first point of their
dual when Steffen Giles-Osborn and Mikhail Vaval beat Anton Krutkin and Alexandr
Lidzar 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. But the Gold Rush didn't score again despite winning
first sets at the top four singles flights.
Krutkin and Lidzar avenged their doubles defeat, with
Krutkin beating Giles-Osborn 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8) at No. 1 singles and Lidzar
defeating Abbas 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (12-10) at No. 2. Diego Gonzalvez beat
Mario Myles, and Winfried defeated Mikhail Vaval in the other matches decided
by the super-tiebreaker.
The Braves, who lost to Xavier each of the last two
seasons, are 7-8. The Gold Rush has dropped six straight and 11 of its last
13 duals.
Xavier's men will travel to Alexandria, La., for a
3 p.m. Wednesday match against another Southwestern Athletic Conference
opponent, Prairie View.
