Lady Jaguars defeat Nuggets for first time in four years

BATON ROUGE, La. — Xavier University of Louisiana's
Anastesia Opata and Angelina Callis won in singles and teamed for a doubles
victory, but Southern University defeated the Gold Nuggets 5-2 Saturday in a
women's tennis dual match.
It was the first time in four seasons the Lady Jaguars
(11-5) defeated Xavier (11-12), which is 19th in the NAIA coaches poll.
In a dual scored under NCAA rules, Southern won the
doubles point, then earned the first four singles victories. Kathryn Curtis
clinched the dual with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Colleen McArthur at No. 4.
Xavier finally scored when Callis defeated Janelle
Mosley 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5) at No. 2, then Opata closed the dual with a 1-6,
6-2, 1-0 (10-5) decision against Megan Wiltz at No. 1.
Opata and Callis, ninth in the ITA's NAIA doubles
rankings, also needed a tiebreaker to beat Wiltz and Curtis 8-7 (8-4).
Opata and Callis are 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles
in their careers against Southern.
The Lady Jaguars' victory was their first against
Xavier since 2003.
Xavier has dropped five in a row and eight of its last
10 duals. The Nuggets and the Gold Rush will play Alcorn State at 1:30 p.m.
Tuesday at the University of New Orleans Tennis Center.
