Opata-Callis victory highlight of XU duals at Azusa

AZUSA, Calif. — Xavier University of Louisiana's
Anastesia Opata and Angelina Callis, ranked 14th by the Intercollegiate Tennis
Association among NAIA doubles teams, defeated sixth-ranked Sarita Adhikary
and Sheryl Bon of Azusa Pacific 8-6 Monday.
Azusa won both dual matches, however. The women won
7-2, and the men won 9-0 in matchups of ranked NAIA teams.
Callis was unbeaten for the 19th-ranked Gold Nuggets
(11-8). She also defeated 29th-ranked Natalie McNall, who retired after losing
the first seven games.
The Gold Rush (9-8) didn't win a set against
Azusa's men. The closest match came at No. 1 singles, where sixth-ranked Matthijs
Bolsius beat 21st-ranked Steffen Giles-Osborn 7-5, 6-4. Giles-Osborn entered the
rankings Friday.
Xavier had just five players available for each dual
and had to forfeit matches at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
Azusa Pacific's men (12-3), ranked fifth, won their
sixth in a row. The Azusa women (10-4), ranked sixth, have won five of six.
Both Xavier teams will play Fresno Pacific at 4 p.m.
CDT Tuesday (2 p.m. PDT) at Costa Mesa, Calif. Fresno Pacific's men are
ranked first in the NAIA and the defending national champion, and the
women are No. 2. Fresno Pacific will be the second of four ranked opponents
in four days for the Gold Rush and Gold Nuggets.
