MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Xavier University of Louisiana's
Angelina Callis defeated Brenau's nationally ranked Kate Mazackova in straight
sets Saturday, but that was the lone highlight for the Gold Nuggets in a 5-1
women's tennis loss to the Golden Tigers in the AUM Spring Invitational.
Xavier's women (9-6) later lost 5-0 to Lindsey Wilson,
and Xavier's men (7-5) lost 5-0 to Auburn Montgomery.
Brenau (6-4), ranked seventh, earned its third victory
in two days against a ranked NAIA opponent. Xavier is 19th.
Callis beat Mazackova, No. 43 in NAIA singles, 6-3,
7-5. Callis is unranked nationally but two places behind Mazackova in the South
rankings.
The dual was stopped when Hannah Thompson defeated
Colleen McArthur 6-1, 6-2 for the clinching point. The No. 1 singles match
between Xavier's Anastesia Opata and Brenau's Lyn See Choo — ranked
18th and 23rd, respectively, in the NAIA — did not finish. Opata won the
first set 6-4, and Choo won the second 6-2.
Choo and Mazackova, No. 5 nationally in doubles, beat
14th-ranked Opata and Callis 8-2.
Carmen Nelson and Melissa DeLoach won first sets in
uncompleted singles matches against Lindsey Wilson (2-3). Callis missed a second
victory against a ranked opponent when No. 46 Jessica Weyreuter defeated her
6-3, 6-4 in the clinching singles match.
Opata and Callis lost 8-4 to Trina Slapeka and
Weyreuter, ranked 10th in doubles.
Auburn Montgomery's men, ranked second and winner of
five of the last eight NAIA national championships, improved to 8-0 after
defeating the 13th-ranked Gold Rush (7-5) for the second time in nine days.
Xavier has dropped four straight — its longest losing streak since
February 2008 — with three of the losses to ranked teams.
AUM displayed its depth and talent when
Alberto Romeo, who didn't play in the Senators' 9-0 victory over XU on
March 5, earned points in doubles and singles. Romeo beat Steffen Giles-Osborn
6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.
