Gold Nuggets' Powell is Louisiana Player of the Week
March 8, 2010

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana standout Brittany Powell was selected Louisiana Player of the Week in women's basketball for March 1-7.
Powell, a winner of this award three times in two seasons, averaged 17.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and three steals to help the Gold Nuggets win quarterfinal and semifinal games in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament. She shot 60 percent from the floor and 84.6 percent from the line.
Powell — a 6-foot senior forward/center from Milwaukee and a graduate of Divine Savior Holy Angels High School — also won the award for Jan. 18-24 and in 2008 for Dec. 1-7. She is one of four multiple winners this season, joining Louisiana Tech's Shanavia Dowdell and LSU's Allison Hightower (three times) and Tech's Adrienne Johnson (twice).
A Louisiana Sports Writers Association panel selects the award.
Xavier (27-5) will play LSU-Shreveport (23-5) at 7 p.m. Monday at The Barn in the GCAC Tournament championship game. Both teams already have automatic bids to the NAIA Division I National Championship, which will begin March 17 at Jackson, Tenn.
