NEW ORLEANS — Brittany Powell scored 17 of her 23 points in the second half Friday to help NAIA No. 20 Xavier University of Louisiana pull away for a 71-54 women's basketball victory over Tougaloo in the semifinals of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.
The victory was the 20th in a row for the Gold Nuggets (27-5), who will play LSU-Shreveport for the championship at 7 p.m. Monday at The Barn.
Jasmine Grant and Christina Warren added 10 points apiece for Xavier.
Damara Bolton scored 12 points, and Shalenia Wilcher and Kim Kern had 11 apiece for Tougaloo (16-15). Victoria Jones had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Xavier never trailed, but there were four ties — the last at 26 early in the second half — and Bolton's 3-pointer with 13:30 remaining had the Lady Bulldogs still within striking distance at 34-33.
But Powell, named GCAC Player of the Year earlier in the day, made a basket on the next possession to start an 18-6 run. Warren scored seven points during the burst, including a 3-pointer, and the Nuggets led by double digits for the majority of the final eight minutes. The winning margin was their largest of the game.
Xavier shot 50 percent from the floor in the second half to finish at 37.9 percent. The Nuggets limited Tougaloo to 26.3 percent in shutting down a Lady Bulldogs offense that averaged 84.7 points in its previous three games.
Tougaloo made 19-of-20 free throws, and Xavier finished 23-of-27 after making its first 14. The Nuggets matched their season high for free throws made. Powell was 9-of-11 from the line, and Jazmoné Kelly made 8-of-10.
     Xavier led 26-24 at halftime.
The victory was Xavier's 11th in a row at The Barn and the 91st in its last 97 games in its campus facility. The Nuggets have won their last 28 home meetings with Tougaloo and 47 of the last 50 overall.
LSUS, the tournament's No. 2 seed, advanced with a 75-62 home victory over Loyola, the defending tournament champion. Xavier's victory enabled LSUS to clinch the GCAC's second automatic bid to the NAIA Division I National Championship.
