Meyerchick leads William Carey past Gold Rush, 77-67

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Senior guard Drew Meyerchick
scored 29 points Saturday to lead William Carey to a 77-67 Gulf Coast Athletic
Conference men's basketball victory against Xavier University of Louisiana.
Meyerchick, the reigning GCAC Player of the Week,
was 8-of-15 from the floor, 11-of-12 from the line and had four rebounds,
two assists and two steals in 34 minutes.
Brandon Cooks scored 14 points for the Crusaders
(21-4 overall, 11-3 GCAC), and Marcus Spann and Terry Wade scored 10 apiece.
It was William Carey's sixth consecutive victory and ninth in 10 games.
Devin Andrew scored 14 points for the Gold Rush
(14-12, 5-9). Cordell Hadnot and Michael Harvey scored 13 points apiece, and
Ryan DeRousselle scored 10.
William Carey led 32-30 at halftime, then pulled
away with the help of 24-of-26 second-half free throws. The Crusaders made
29-of-33 for the game.
Xavier shot 51 percent from the floor, 57.7 percent
in the second half.
It's the first time in six tries that William Carey
defeated Xavier in Clinton Gym, and it's the first time since 2002-03 that the
Crusaders swept the Rush in the regular season. William Carey won 53-48
at Xavier on Jan. 23. The Crusaders began the season with a nine-game losing
streak against Xavier.
Xavier has lost two straight and 10 of its past 15 games.
