Powell, Harvey give Xavier a sweep of GCAC awards

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana swept
the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week basketball awards for Jan. 11-17.
Brittany Powell won the women's honor for the second time in three weeks, and Michael
Harvey won the men's award.
Powell picked up an additional honor Wednesday as the
women's Division II winner in the Heritage Sports Radio Network National Player of
the Week Fan Poll for Jan. 11-16.
Powell, a 6-foot forward/center from Milwaukee
and a graduate of Divine Savior Holy Angels High School, averaged 16 points, 5.5
rebounds, three blocks and 2.5 steals during the Gold Nuggets' 2-0 week which moved
them into sole possession of first place in the GCAC. She scored 16 points and had
a career-high-tying four blocked shots against Spring Hill and had 16 points and
a career-high-tying four steals against SUNO.
Harvey, a 6-3 junior guard from Amite, La., and a graduate
of Amite High School, averaged 21.5 points in two games and shot 61 percent from
the floor and 67 percent from 3-point range (8-of-12) during the Gold Rush's 1-1
week. Harvey scored 18 points against Spring Hill and a career-high 25 against
SUNO and made a career-best four 3-pointers in each game.
Powell collected 74.2 percent of the votes to win the
HSRN award, which is given to athletes representing Historically Black Colleges
and Universities (HBCUs). Harvey collected 48.6 percent to narrowly miss winning
the men's Division II award.
Both Xavier teams will continue their GCAC schedules
this week with a doubleheader Thursday at Mobile (women at 5:30 p.m., men at
7:30 p.m.) and a home doubleheader Saturday against William Carey at The Barn
(women at 5 p.m, men at 7 p.m.). On Saturday XU's Zeta Phi Beta sorority will
sponsor the doubleheader, and XU's X-Factor drumline will perform at halftime
of both games.
