Powell selected to Surf City Classic all-tournament team

     IRVINE, Calif. — Brittany Powell, a senior on the Xavier University of Louisiana women's basketball team, was the Gold Nuggets' representative on the Surf City Classic all-tournament team announced Thursday.
     Powell, a 6-foot forward/center from Milwaukee and a graduate of Divine Savior Holy Angels High School, averaged 12.3 points, six rebounds, 2.3 assists and two steals in three games. Powell scored a season-high 18 points Tuesday against Daemen and had 10 points and tied season highs of seven rebounds and three assists Wednesday against Metro State.
     Powell hit a 3-pointer — her first as a collegian — to close the first half against Metro State and give the Gold Nuggets a 35-24 halftime lead.
     In 10 games this season, Powell leads Xavier (7-3) with 10.5 points and 1.3 blocked shots per game and is second with 5.2 rebounds.
     Also on the 10-player all-tournament team were Nicole Fu and Kayanna Nichols of Concordia (Calif.), Sarah Soroka of Daemen, Ashley Hardin of Grand Canyon, Chelsea Williamson of Metro State, Jessie Domes of Purchase, Stephanie Smith of Washington & Jefferson and Tiffany Gregorich and Alise Holst of Wisconsin–River Falls. Soroka was chosen the most outstanding player.
     Xavier's next game will start at 4 p.m. Saturday against Lindsey Wilson at The Barn.
