Southern rallies to beat Gold Rush in overtime

     BATON ROUGE, La. — Julius Ingram's layup with three seconds remaining in overtime Thursday rallied Southern University to a 77-75 men's basketball exhibition victory against Xavier University of Louisiana.
     The Jaguars outscored the Gold Rush 9-0 in the final 1:36 of regulation to tie the score at 69. Earnest Jones' three-point play with 28.6 seconds remaining forced the extra period.
     Jones scored 14 points, and Ingram and Brian White had 13 apiece for Southern.
     Wanto Joseph scored 15 points and Devin Andrew 11 for Xavier. Cordell Hadnot and Kevin Miller scored 10 apiece, and Hadnot grabbed 11 rebounds.
     Xavier led 40-24 at halftime and had 20-point leads twice in the first half.
     The Rush's only lead of overtime was with 4:34 remaining, when DeRonn Scott hit the first of two free throws to make it 70-69.
     Five Xavier players fouled out and three more finished with four fouls. The Gold Rush was whistled for 39 fouls, 12 more than Southern. But the Jaguars had trouble converting. They made just four of their first 17 free-throw attempts and finished 27-of-52.
     Xavier outshot the Jaguars 41 to 38 percent from the floor and outrebounded them 45-44. But the Rush committed 30 turnovers, seven more than Southern.
     It was the second straight season that Xavier, an NAIA member, visited Southern, an NCAA Division I member, for an exhibition. Southern won 63-56 a year ago.
     Xavier's next game will start at 3 p.m. Saturday against Wesley (Miss.) at The Barn.
