Nuggets' Powell chosen to preseason All-GCAC team

     NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana women's basketball standout Brittany Powell was chosen to the 2009-10 preseason All-Gulf Coast Athletic Conference team, the league announced Monday.
     Powell, a 6-foot senior forward/center from Milwaukee, Wis., and a 2006 graduate of Divine Savior Holy Angels High School, was All-GCAC and earned honorable mention on the NAIA Division I All-America team and the All-Louisiana team this past season after leading the Gold Nuggets with 11.8 points per game. Powell also led XU with 755 minutes played, 84 free throws made and 116 free throws attempted. She was second on team with 6.1 rebounds per game and 41 blocked shots
     Powell is in her second season at Xavier after transferring from San Jose State.
     Nine of the GCAC's 10 schools are represented on the 10-player team, which was chosen by the league's head coaches. The GCAC will announce the preseason all-conference men's basketball team Tuesday.
     Xavier's women will begin their season this week with two games in the Port City Tip-Off Classic at Mobile, Ala. The Nuggets will play Talladega at 5 p.m. Friday and Martin Methodist at 1 p.m. Saturday. Site of both games will be the University of Mobile's Pharr Gym.
     Xavier, 23-9 this past season, seeks its 17th 20-victory season in 18 years and its 14th trip to the NAIA Division I National Championship in 16 years.
