ALMA MATER
In the Mississippi Valley,
In the Crescent Bend
Stands our loved and noble Xavier,
Far her praises send.
Refrain:
Wave her colors bear them onward
Gold and white so true
Hail to thee, all hail, dear Xavier
Hail, all hail, X.U.!
Xavier, ever be our guide
And lead us on the way,
Through life's journey, onward, upward
To the eternal day. (Refrain)

Xavier displays winning touch in all-time NAIA rankings
October 23, 2009
|
NEW ORLEANS — The NAIA released the lists of its all-time winningest basketball programs Tuesday,
and Xavier University of Louisiana is prominent on both.
The Gold Rush is 16th on the men's list with 1,101 victories. The Gold Nuggets are 16th among the
women with 634 victories.
Eric Smith, sports information director of NAIA member Taylor University (Upland, Ind.), compiled the list
and ranked the 25 winningest men's and women's programs, regardless of classification. Xavier is one of eight schools on both lists, joining Doane,
Georgetown (Ky.), Oklahoma Baptist, Oklahoma City, Saint Ambrose (Iowa), Taylor and William Jewell (Mo.).
Xavier and Saint Ambrose are the only schools with both programs in the top 16.
Saint Ambrose is third in women's victories and 11th in men's.
Xavier has the fifth highest winning percentage (.630) among the 25 winningest
men's teams and the seventh highest percentage (.685) among the women.
In 71 seasons of men's basketball, Xavier has won 1,101 games and lost 648.
Xavier's women are 634-292 in 31 seasons. The Gold Rush has 25 seasons of 20 or more victories — the most
in the history of Louisiana men's collegiate basketball — and the Gold Nuggets have reached 20 victories 19 times,
including 16 times in the past 17 seasons.
Georgetown is the leader in men's victories with 1,613. Union (Tenn.), the defending Division I
national champion and winner of three of the past five titles, is the women's leader with 1,035.
Xavier fielded its first men's team in 1928-29 and its first women's team of the Title IX era in 1977-78.
Xavier occasionally competed in women's basketball prior to 1961, but records for that era are sketchy and have not been compiled.
Neither team competed in 2005-06 in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and the Gold Rush did not compete for seven seasons (1960-67)
after the university dropped intercollegiate athletics.
Both teams will begin their 2009-10 seasons next week. The Nuggets will play Talladega at 5 p.m. Oct. 30
in the Port City Tip-Off Classic at Mobile, Ala., and the Rush will play Carver Bible at 1 p.m. Oct. 31 at The Barn.
