GCAC basketball coaches pick Gold Rush eighth

     NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana finished eighth out of 10 teams in the 2009-10 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference preseason men's basketball coaches poll announced Wednesday.
     The Gold Rush — which was 19-12 this past season and tied for fourth place in the GCAC with Spring Hill — received 36 points. Xavier was one point behind Belhaven and Spring Hill, which tied for sixth place.
     Four teams received first-place votes. Defending regular-season champion Tougaloo and four-time defending tournament champion LSU-Shreveport each received 69 points to lead all teams, but Tougaloo was awarded first place it received more first-place votes than LSUS. Xavier will begin its conference schedule in January with consecutive road games against LSUS and Tougaloo.
     The last time Xavier was picked to finish in the bottom half of the standings (2006-07), the Rush earned a share of the regular-season championship with Tougaloo and reached the second round of the NAIA Division I National Championship for the first time since 1973. The Rush's lone eighth-place finish in the final GCAC standings was in 1998-99.
     Xavier will open its 72nd season at 1 p.m. Oct. 31 against Carver Bible at The Barn. The Rush will play its first eight regular-season games at home.
