In the Mississippi Valley,
In the Crescent Bend
Stands our loved and noble Xavier,
Far her praises send.
Wave her colors bear them onward
Gold and white so true
Hail to thee, all hail, dear Xavier
Hail, all hail, X.U.!
Xavier, ever be our guide
And lead us on the way,
Through life's journey, onward, upward
To the eternal day. (Refrain)
Gold Rush to play 8 straight regular-season home games
September 23, 2009
NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's
2009-10 men's basketball schedule will feature 17 home games, including eight
in a row to start the regular season, and two road exhibitions against NCAA
Division I opponents.
Seventh-year head coach Dannton Jackson — whose Gold Rush won 134
games and reached the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I National Championship four consecutive times —
announced on Wednesday the schedule. There will be four first-time opponents,
a trip to Florida for the first time since 1996 and a Feb. 20 matchup
in New Orleans Arena — the Crosstown Classic —
against longtime city, HBCU and Gulf Coast Athletic Conference rival Dillard.
The exhibitions — Nov. 5 at Southern University and Nov. 10
at Western Kentucky — will occur during that early stretch of home games.
Xavier's 72nd season will tip off at 1 p.m. Oct. 31 when Xavier plays Carver Bible at The Barn.
It will be the second straight year the Xavier men play on Halloween, and it matches
the earliest regular-season start in Rush history.
There will be three Saturday home games in November,
Nov. 21 against Wiley during XU's homecoming.
Wiley is on Xavier's schedule for the 11th straight season, and it's the seventh time in eight seasons they'll meet at least twice.
Xavier will play an exhibition at Southern for the second
straight season. Western Kentucky, winner of first-round games in the NCAA Tournament
the past two seasons, is a first-time opponent.
It will be the third consecutive year and the seventh
time in 10 seasons that Xavier and Dillard play in New Orleans Arena. An added feature
of this season's Crosstown Classic will be Rush/Nugget Alumni Weekend, a gathering
of former XU men's and women's basketball players.
The other Xavier-Dillard matchup will be Jan. 30
at the University of New Orleans' Lakefront Arena.
The other first-time opponents will be Brewton-Parker at home
Nov. 13, Concordia (Ala.) at home Nov. 23 and at St. Thomas (Fla.) in the Miami Gardens
Classic on Dec. 30. Xavier's other Miami Gardens Classic opponent will be Florida
Memorial, an HBCU the Rush hasn't played since the 1975-76 season.
Xavier will play Delta State, an NCAA Division II Tournament
qualifier this past season, Nov. 18 at The Barn. The Rush and Statesmen will meet
for the first time since 1986-87, and Delta State will be the second NCAA D-II opponent in three seasons to visit The Barn.
The Rush will play Texas College for the seventh straight
season but twice for the first time since 1993-94.
Xavier will begin its
GCAC schedule with a pair of road games for the third straight season.
The opener will be Jan. 7 at LSU-Shreveport, the four-time defending GCAC
Tournament champion. Two days later the Rush will visit defending GCAC regular-season
The first conference home game will be Jan. 14 against Spring Hill.
Xavier's Feb. 6 game at The Barn against LSUS will be
an NABC Coaches vs. Cancer Game, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.
More than 500 collegiate and 100 high school programs have raised more than $50 million
since 1993 for that program, a collaboration between the cancer society and the National
Association of Basketball Coaches.
The GCAC Tournament will begin March 2 and be played at
campus sites for the fifth straight year. Hosts in each round will be the highest
With the exception of the Crosstown Classic, home games
will be played at The Barn on Xavier's campus. This will be the 65th season of Gold Rush
basketball at The Barn, which opened in 1937.
Xavier was 19-12 in 2008-09
and tied for fourth place in the GCAC. Xavier's 25 seasons of 20 or more
victories are the most in the history of Louisiana men's college basketball.
