Broussard, Jones on Ashe Sports Scholars first team

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's
Alexandra Broussard and Danielle Jones are first-team Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars
and among seven XU student-athletes to receive national recognition for their athletic
and academic success.
The Ashe awards, sponsored by the magazine Diverse Issues in Higher Education
and announced Thursday, are given to student-athletes of color who have a cumulative grade-point
average of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale through the fall 2008 semester. The student-athletes
must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution, must be an active
member of an intercollegiate team during the 2008-09 academic year, and must have a record
of service to the campus or community.
Broussard, a senior psychology and premedicine
major from Columbus, Ohio, and Bishop Watterson High School, is on the women's tennis first
team for the second consecutive year and honored for the third straight year. Jones, a sophomore biology and premedicine
major from Baton Rouge, La., and Episcopal High School, is on the women's basketball first team.
The other Xavier representatives are:
• Terry Richardson, men's tennis second team, senior biology
and premedicine major from Ellenwood, Ga., and Stockbridge High School.
• Kelechi Okoroha, men's basketball second team,
graduate school in education from Missouri City, Texas, and Dulles High School.
• Cameron Knowles, men's tennis third team, senior chemistry and pre-pharmacy
major from Omaha, Neb., and Central High School.
• Darren Wallace, men's track/cross country third team, senior mass communications
major from Baton Rouge and Baton Rouge Magnet High School.
• Ashley Broden, women's track/cross country honorable mention, senior and second-year
pharmacy major from Baton Rouge and Baton Rouge Magnet.
Broussard, Okoroha and Richardson were honored for the third time, and Wallace
and Broden were honored for the second time. This is the third consecutive year that Xavier has
multiple first-team selections.
