NEW ORLEANS — Steffen Giles-Osborn and Angelina Callis
scored clinching victories Sunday as Xavier University of Louisiana won men's
and women's tennis duals against Jackson State at the University of New Orleans Tennis Center.
The Gold Rush, ranked 15th in the NAIA, won 9-0, and
the Gold Nuggets, ranked 17th, won 7-2. Both Xavier teams are 8-3 this season,
and both have three victories against NCAA Division I opponents.
The teams used the NAIA scoring format, which
awards one point to the winner of each match.
Giles-Osborn defeated Arturo Jimenez 6-4, 6-1 at
No. 3 singles to clinch the men's dual. Callis, playing No. 2 women's singles,
gave the Nuggets an insurmountable 5-0 lead in their dual when she beat
Asha Saravanamohan 6-1, 6-1.
Both Xavier teams beat Jackson State for the
second consecutive year.
"Overall we played real well," Xavier coach
Alan Green said. "We bounced back well from the UNO matches on Friday.
Now we'll rest a little and prepare to face some of the top NAIA teams
later this week."
Xavier will be among seven ranked women's teams and
six ranked men's teams in the Auburn Montgomery Invitational, a three-day,
all-NAIA event which will begin Friday at Montgomery, Ala.
