ALMA MATER
In the Mississippi Valley,
In the Crescent Bend
Stands our loved and noble Xavier,
Far her praises send.
Refrain:
Wave her colors bear them onward
Gold and white so true
Hail to thee, all hail, dear Xavier
Hail, all hail, X.U.!
Xavier, ever be our guide
And lead us on the way,
Through life's journey, onward, upward
To the eternal day. (Refrain)

Okoroha on Academic All-District 6 second team
February 5, 2009
NEW ORLEANS — Kelechi Okoroha, a senior on
the Xavier University of Louisiana men's basketball team, has been chosen
to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 6 second team in the college division.
Okoroha — from Missouri City, Texas, and a 2004
graduate of Dulles High School in Sugar Land, Texas — qualified academically
with a 3.37 grade-point average as an undergraduate.
|
He received his bachelor of
science degree in biology this past May and compiled a 4.0 GPA for graduate
work during the fall 2008 semester. The 6-foot-4 forward leads Xavier in rebounds
per game (6.5), blocked shots (11), field-goal percentage (.569) and free throws made
(71), and he shares the team lead in games started (17). His 9.6 points per game
rank second on the Gold Rush.
Okoroha is the only men's or women's basketball player
from the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference or from an HBCU (Historically Black
Colleges and Universities) to make an all-district team this
season. Xavier is one of two NAIA Division I members represented on men's or
women's basketball all-district teams this season. The other is Oklahoma Christian,
which has a first-team woman and a second-team man and woman.
A check of multiple sources has found no Xavier
representatives on previous Academic All-District or Academic All-America teams,
which are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
District 6 comprises schools from six states: Louisiana,
Arkansas, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. There are eight districts
nationwide, and teams represent the university division (NCAA Division I members)
or the college division (everyone else, including Xavier). Nominees must be a
starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale).
They also must have completed at least one full calendar year at their current
institution and reached sophomore athletic eligibility. First-team all-district
members advance to the Academic All-America ballot.
Xavier, 14-8 and in fourth place in the GCAC entering
Thursday's games, will play league-leading LSU-Shreveport at 7 p.m. Saturday at
The Barn. The Pilots are No. 23 in the NAIA Division I coaches poll.
