Gold Nuggets' Powell wins two player-of-week awards

     NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisana's Brittany Powell, who averaged 21.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocked shots in two victories, earned women's basketball player-of-the-week awards Tuesday from the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference and Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
     Powell, a 6-foot junior forward from Milwaukee, Wis., and a graduate of Divine Savior Holy Angels High School, received the GCAC and Louisiana awards after scoring a career-high 25 points in an 80-64 victoy at Wiley and collecting 18 points and season highs of 12 rebounds and four blocks in a 74-57 home victory against Paul Quinn. Powell shot 62 percent from the floor and 78 percent from the line to help the Gold Nuggets improve to 7-1 and climb two places to 16th in the NAIA Division I coaches poll.
     Powell leads Xavier for the season with averages of 12.8 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.
     Teammate Johnna Williams shared the GCAC award the previous week.
     Xavier's next game will be Dec. 19 against Judson (Ill.) in the San Juan Classic at San Juan, Puerto Rico.
