Xavier women 19th in NAIA preseason coaches poll

NEW ORLEANS — For the first time since
the 2004-05 season, the Xavier University of Louisiana women's
basketball program is in the NAIA Division I preseason coaches top 25.
The Gold Nuggets — 27-7 this past season
and the preseason favorite in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference coaches poll —
are No. 19 after collecting 112 points from a nationwide panel of 11 coaches.
It's Xavier's first preseason ranking since the 2004-05 team was 15th.
Xavier will play the Louisiana Hurricanes in
an exhibition at 7 p.m. Saturday at The Barn. The Nuggets' first
regular-season home game will tip off at 6 p.m. Nov. 10 against Huston-Tillotson.
The Nuggets return five letterwinners, including starters
Shayla Boyd and LaTashia Wise, from this past season. Also back is Johnna Williams,
Xavier's leading returning scorer and rebounder.
Loyola, which beat Xavier for the GCAC regular-season
title the past two seasons but lost 65-64 at home to the Nuggets in the 2008
GCAC Tournament final, is No. 24. The Wolfpack is the only other GCAC team in
the top 25. A third league member, William Carey, received one point.
Three other Xavier opponents are ranked. Lee (Tenn.) is No. 7, Berry is
No. 23, and Olivet Nazarene is No. 25. The Nuggets will play all three of those
opponents on the road.
