Nuggets grab top spot in GCAC basketball coaches poll

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's
women's basketball team is the preseason favorite in the Gulf Coast Athletic
Conference, according to a coaches poll announced Tuesday.
The Nuggets — who qualified for the NAIA Division
I National Championship 13 of the past 14 seasons — received eight of 10 first-place votes and 80
points. Two-time defending regular-season
champion Loyola was second with 69 points.
William Carey received the other two first-place votes
and finished third with 66 points.
Xavier was 27-7 in 2007-08, finished second to Loyola
in the GCAC regular season for the second consecutive year, then
beat the Wolfpack 65-64 in the GCAC Tournament final at Loyola on
Shayla Boyd's basket with seven-tenths of a second remaining.
Boyd, a sophomore guard, and junior guard/forward
LaTashia Wise are the Nuggets' returning starters.
Xavier will play a Nov. 1 exhibition against the Louisiana Hurricanes
at The Barn and its first regular-season game Nov. 8 against Edward Waters in the
HBCU Preseason Challenge at Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Xavier will play Loyola on Jan. 29
at The Barn and Feb. 4 at Loyola.
Huston-Tillotson (Nov. 10) will be the first regular-season home opponent.
