Dominguez, Callis, Richardsons win HBCU titles
September 27, 2008

Results:  Men    Women

ATLANTA — Xavier University of Louisiana's Yuliem Dominguez played three tennis matches and won two titles Saturday in the HBCU National Championships.
Dominguez needed nearly three hours to defeat Florida A&M's Kathline Durden 6-7 (7-3), 6-3, 6-3 in the women's B-flight singles final. After a 30-minute break which included a snack of bananas and Gatorade, she and Angelina Callis defeated FAMU's Alexis Brown and Britney Dean 8-2.
Xavier's Richardson brothers, Terry and Sean, defeated FAMU's Paul Paige and David Jackson 8-6 for the men's B-flight doubles championship.
Dominguez, a senior in her third season at Xavier, was a combined 6-0 in the three-day event. She and Callis began Saturday with an 8-1 semifinal victory against Bethune-Cookman's Janice Ward and Andrea Paez.
"Yuliem had her best week of tennis since she's been at Xavier," Xavier coach Alan Green said. "She played smart and gutted out her finals. In the singles final she took pace off the ball and moved her opponent all over the court."
The Richardsons — Terry is a senior, Sean a freshman — never trailed in their third doubles victory in two days.
"Terry and Sean played today one of the best doubles matches I've seen as a coach," said Green, in his sixth season at Xavier. "They looked like they've been playing together forever, even though they've done it just three times in college. They have the best chemistry right now among our men's doubles teams."
The only Xavier finalist to lose was Jihanna Mughnee, who dropped an 8-4 decision to FAMU's. Dean in the women's singles consolation C-flight. Mughnee won 16 of 17 games Friday in two consolation victories.
Point totals were not announced, but the order of the team scoring for both genders was the same — Florida A&M was first, Hampton was second and Xavier was third.
