ALMA MATER
In the Mississippi Valley,
In the Crescent Bend
Stands our loved and noble Xavier,
Far her praises send.
Refrain:
Wave her colors bear them onward
Gold and white so true
Hail to thee, all hail, dear Xavier
Hail, all hail, X.U.!
Xavier, ever be our guide
And lead us on the way,
Through life's journey, onward, upward
To the eternal day. (Refrain)

Gold Rush to play 16 home games, 2 SWAC exhibitions
August 19, 2008
NEW ORLEANS — Sixteen home games and two road
exhibitions against Southwestern Athletic Conference opponents are among the
highlights of the 2008-09 Xavier University of Louisiana men's basketball schedule.
Coach Dannton Jackson announced on Tuesday the schedule, which includes
a Jan. 24 game in New Orleans Arena — the Crosstown Classic —
against longtime city, HBCU and Gulf Coast Athletic Conference rival Dillard.
Xavier will play its first six regular-season games at
home and its earliest regular-season opener: Oct. 31 against
Southern Polytechnic, an NAIA Division I member which has produced 20-game
winners eight of the past nine seasons.
Sandwiched in the middle of the early home stretch is a Nov. 11
trip to Baton Rouge, La., for an exhibition against NCAA Division I and SWAC member Southern University.
The Gold Rush and Jaguars will meet for the first time since the 2000-01 season.
The other road exhibition against a SWAC opponent
will be Dec. 20 against Alcorn State, which will play Xavier for the first time since 1978-79.
The Rush will play Wiley on Nov. 14 in Xavier's student homecoming
game and Texas College on Nov. 22 in the alumni homecoming game.
The Rush will make its first trip to California since
2004 when it plays MidAmerica Nazarene and Montana State-Northern in the Concordia
Thanksgiving Tournament at Irvine on Nov. 28-29. MidAmerica Nazarene is moving to NAIA
Division I this season after winning the Division II championship in 2007 and reaching
the semifinals in 2008. Montana State-Northern was 22-9 this past season and earned
a share of the Frontier Conference regular-season championship.
Xavier will conclude the non-conference portion of the schedule
with games Dec. 30-31 against Paul Quinn and Jarvis Christian in the HBCU Classic at Dallas.
Including the exhibitions, 11 of the 14 non-conference contests will be against HBCUs.
Xavier will begin its
GCAC schedule with a pair of road games for the second straight season.
The GCAC opener will be Jan. 8 at defending regular-season and tournament champion LSU-Shreveport.
The GCAC home opener will be Jan. 15 against Tougaloo.
All four GCAC games against Xavier's HBCU city rivals, Dillard and SUNO,
will be played on Saturdays for the first time since 1998.
Xavier and another GCAC and city rival, Loyola, will meet
Jan. 29 at The Barn in an NABC Coaches vs. Cancer Game, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.
More than 500 collegiate and 100 high school programs have raised nearly $40 million
since 1993 for that program, a collaboration between the cancer society and the National
Association of Basketball Coaches.
The other Xavier-Dillard matchup will be Feb. 28
at the University of New Orleans' Lakefront Arena. Dillard will be the home team that day.
With the exception of the Crosstown Classic, home games
will be played at The Barn on Xavier's campus. This will be the 64th season of Gold Rush
basketball at The Barn, which opened in 1937.
Xavier, an NAIA Division I school, was 24-10 in 2007-08
and finished third in the GCAC. The Gold Rush qualified for the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I National
Championship for a school-record fourth consecutive time. Xavier's 25 seasons of 20 or more
victories are the most in the history of Louisiana men's college basketball.
