Cleaves is All-Louisiana a record third time
April 7, 2008
NEW ORLEANS — Jarryn Cleaves of Xavier University of New Orleans set a school
record Monday when she was selected third-team All-Louisiana in women's basketball
for the third time.
Cleaves, a 5-foot-8 senior guard from Memphis, Tenn., and a 2003 graduate of East
High School, is the first Xavier basketball player, male or female, to make the All-Louisiana
team three times. Cleaves was on the third team as a sophomore in 2004-05 and
as a junior in 2006-07. Xavier did not compete in 2005-06 due to the effects of
Hurricane Katrina.
She previously shared the Xavier record with Cassee Davis (women's third team in
1995-96, second team in 1997-98), Rodolfo Gill (men's third team in 1983-84 and
1984-85) and Juan Mercier (men's third team in 1986-87, second team in 1987-88).
Cleaves averaged 14.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 3.3 steals this past season.
She helped the Gold Nuggets go 27-7, win the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament and
qualify for the NAIA national tourney for a school-record seventh consecutive time.
She ranked eighth in Division I in steals per game, 23rd in 3-pointers made per game (2.4)
and 47th in scoring. The pharmacy major is Xavier's career leader in games played (136),
3-point field goals (283), 3-point field-goal percentage (.357) and 3-point field-goal attempts (793).
She is second in free-throw percentage (.756) and fifth in points (1,745).
LSU All-American Sylvia Fowles was selected Player of the Year.
The Louisiana Sports Writers Association sanctions the All-Louisiana team,
which is selected by a panel of state media and sports information personnel.
