Gold Nuggets jump 10 spots in NAIA rankings
April 2, 2008

NEW ORLEANS — The Xavier University of Louisiana women's tennis team, winner of 10 of its past 11 matches, moved from 24th to 14th in the NAIA coaches poll announced Wednesday.

Xavier is 24th in the men's poll for the fourth consecutive time.

The Gold Nuggets' jump of 10 places is the largest in any direction by a women's team in this season's rankings. It's Xavier's highest position since ranking 11th on March 21, 2007.

A 5-2 victory on March 18 at then-13th-ranked Shorter helped the Nuggets (12-5) climb in the poll. Shorter dropped to 20th Wednesday.

Xavier's men (10-8) have won nine of their past 12 matches. Both Xavier teams finished 8-0 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference to clinch the No. 1 seeds for the conference tournament April 11 at Jackson, Miss.

Coach Alan Green also announced schedule changes Wednesday:

• Auburn Montgomery, the No. 1 team in both polls, canceled its AUM Invitational, in which Xavier was scheduled to compete Friday through Sunday.

• Xavier's match at Alcorn State will be played Sunday — the original match date — and start at 2 p.m. It had been moved to April 13 when Green added the AUM Invitational to the schedule.

• The GCAC Tournament will be conducted in one day (April 11), not two as originally scheduled. If weather does not delay the tournament, Xavier will remain in Jackson to play Jackson State at 10 a.m. on April 12 at Tennis Center South.
