Eastern Illinois ends Rush winning streak

NEW ORLEANS — Eastern Illinois defeated Xavier University of Louisiana 7-2 in men's tennis Thursday at UNO Wow Café Tennis Center to end the five-match winning streak of the Gold Rush, ranked 24th in the NAIA.

Vusumzi Kempele of the Gold Rush defeated Felipe Gama 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 singles and is 7-1 this season. Kempele and Terry Richardson improved to 9-1 at No. 3 doubles with an 8-6 victory over Jeff Rutherford and Vuk Milicevic.

The Panthers clinched the match at No. 5 singles when Chris Thomas rallied from a 5-4 third-set deficit to defeat Mario Myles 0-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Xavier is 6-6 — 2-2 against NCAA Division I opponents — and Eastern Illinois is 6-5. Xavier's men and women will play Gulf Coast Athletic Conference opponent Spring Hill in a makeup match at 3 p.m. Friday at UNO.
