In the Mississippi Valley,
In the Crescent Bend
Stands our loved and noble Xavier,
Far her praises send.
Refrain:
Wave her colors bear them onward
Gold and white so true
Hail to thee, all hail, dear Xavier
Hail, all hail, X.U.!
Xavier, ever be our guide
And lead us on the way,
Through life's journey, onward, upward
To the eternal day. (Refrain)

No. 8 Xavier men host No. 3 LSUS on Thursday
February 13, 2008
NEW ORLEANS — The longest winning streak of the season has produced the
highest ranking of the season.
The Xavier University of Louisiana men's basketball team is No. 8 — five
spots higher than this past week — in the NAIA Division I coaches poll announced
Wednesday.
Xavier (20-4) also will carry a seven-game win streak into Thursday night's
7:30 game at The Barn against LSU-Shreveport, which is 22-1, ranked third in the
poll and the leader in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference by a game over Xavier and
Mobile. LSUS is 11-1 in the conference, and Xavier and Mobile are 10-2. A Xavier
victory and a Mobile win Thursday at Loyola would create a three-way tie with five
GCAC games remaining for each team.
The Gold Rush is responsible for the Pilots' only loss of the season. Game two
of Xavier's current streak was a 75-72 overtime victory at LSUS on Jan. 23.
Kelechi Okoroha's free throw with 20 seconds remaining put Xavier ahead to stay,
then teammate Mark Stewart made two free throws with 4.4 seconds remaining. But
the Rush could not exhale until Josh Porter missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Porter, a 6-foot-3 senior guard, leads the GCAC and ranks fourth in NAIA Division
I with a 21.9 scoring average. Porter has made a remarkable recovery after breaking
the C5 vertebrae in his neck in the seventh game of the 2006-07 season. He has
averaged 25.6 points in five games since Xavier limited him to seven points on
3-of-13 shooting in January.
LSUS, which climbed one place in this week's poll, has three other double-figure
scorers, including center Jamon Morris, who averages 14.8 points and a GCAC-best
10.7 rebounds. Jared Stevenson leads the conference with 5.3 assists per game.
Stewart, whose 281 3-pointers rank fifth in the history of Louisiana men's college
basketball, leads the Rush with 14.3 points per game. Alfred Williams averages
11.8 points and a team-best seven rebounds. Williams scored a career-high 23 points
at LSUS and averaged 15.8 points and 9.5 rebounds the past six games.
Mountain State of Beckley, W.Va., is No. 1 in the poll for the eighth consecutive
ranking. Poll votes were collected on Monday, one day before the Cougars suffered
their first loss of the season, 71-70 at unranked Lindsey Wilson.
The next coaches poll will be announced Feb. 20.
Xavier remained No. 24 in the women's Division I coaches poll and will play LSUS
(10-11, 6-6) at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at The Barn. The Gold Nuggets (19-5, 9-3) need
one victory to reach 20 for the seventh consecutive season.
